It's not my favorite Star Trek movie but it's not bad. I like the lighthearted campfire scene.

Star Trek III: Search for Spock is 40 years old! Made $76.5 million domestically and $87 million worldwide It's tough to make a decent follow-up to 'Wrath of Khan' which is still considered to be one of the best Star Trek films but the late Leonard Nimoy makes a very good directorial debut This is actually a very well-made sequel despite the even numbered entries making fans and critics very disappointed It still has big death scenes, strong moments, and it feels very operatic Christopher Lloyd makes for a decent villain but the character is more of a one-note player unable to match the late Ricardo Montalban Kirk gets some very dark character moments gaining something but losing something in the process And despite the controversy of fans addressing a huge retcon while also making Starfleet an antagonist the film still works thanks to fantastic special effects, some cool mythos when it comes to the Vulcan species, a decent pace, and balances action, adventure, and character drama James Horner's score is spectacular as always Each of the crew members get their chance to shine And there's many biblical themes of life, death, and rebirth The concept is nice even though Spock is not on screen for a lot of the running time his spirit and essence is present throughout The destruction of the Enterprise is quite epic too and they give it a lot of weight The characters' affection for each other going beyond the uniform clearly shows as well as how imperfect an organization like Starfleet is A crew is willing to sacrifice everything for a fallen friend showing this movie's sentiment and spirituality Nimoy manages to get across Christian themes and scientific ethics--how quickly it moves and the dangers of it It’s not as great as its predecessor but still a very watchable entry in the franchise being the more drama-based one

Did the review end with a prescient comment about the JJ Abrams era of Trek Cinema ??? Well Mr Ebert, I couldn't agree more. Star Trek is no longer controlled by people who love it, but by people who love the money it can generate, and not even a Beastie Boys track can save the massive garbage ttrain being thrust on thristy fans. True the ruination was born with the William Shatrner helmed "V", but the real end of what Star Trek WAS in JJ turning into a razzle-dazzle CGI and emotionally vacant pew-pew sci-fi series. I will stick to the trilogy of II, III and IV to define the franchise.

There’s a difference between good and great. My favorite Star Trek movie is The Undiscovered Country but The Search for Spock is my favorite part in the Genesis Trilogy. Leonard Nimoy was a great director.

i like them all...to me V was the best about human emotion and relationships-shatner did not get the money for effects that he wanted to do-had he it would have been a different story.

Our grandfather was very sick but my dad still managed to take my brother and I to see this 🫂

Walter Koenig has the funniest line in this movie. "Guess who's coming to dinner". The audience in the theaters roared.

Only Star Trek 5 was bad, up to that point.

Star Trek III wasn't a bad movie. It was a good movie with a bad premise. Once they decided to dedicate an entire film to a resurrection plot - "Disney Death," a.k.a. "Comic Book Death" - the damage was done. All they could do then was to try to turn that sow's ear of a concept into the finest faux-silk purse they could make, and they largely succeeded.

4 is my favorite. My wife and I also have a connect since we were Monterey Bay Aquarium members from '89 till '02. Love this whole movie. Catch when Kirk takes his first sip of Michelob. Pulls it off like he never tasted a beer before.

The characters like each other. The actors, though? Not so much!

Shatner wanted to film a scene where Kirk fights five "Rockmen". They only had money for one Rockman costume. In the test footage, the stuntman is stumbling around the set in a heavy costume.

These two were buffoons. They hated Akira until it became popular.

this review is a little harsh, those two don't have a proper understanding of star trek.

6 had some very clever dialogue: "According to one of my ancestors, once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." The punchline being that Sherlock Holmes was Vulcan.

3 was good actually

The row row row your boat scene is the best in the movie.

This was the first Star Trek movie I watched and I saw it in the theater on opening weekend! By that point, my Dad and I were watching TNG every week and I only watched a small bit of an episode of TOS (I think it was “The Changeling”, in hindsight), but I still enjoyed the movie a lot and watched it several more times when we got it on VHS. For me, it’s the third best in the series, behind Wrath of Khan (best) and First Contact (2nd).

I like how Gene says the crew like each other on screen when, in reality, most of the cast hated each other, or at least Shatner. Anyway, IV was the one I watched the second most as a kid after VI, though the probe sounds gave me nightmares.

How can you not love Christopher Plummer as Chang?! Quoting Shakespeare! William Shatner was his understudy back in the day. ❤

I love seeing Doc Brown play one of the most evil Klingon in all of Star Trek. And i love the epic fight between him and Kirk in the end.
