Siskel & Ebert - Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)
It was 30 years ago today, June 9th, 1989, that I first saw this at the Inland Center Mall Theater, now a freeway on/off-ramp in San Bernardino, California, I've always liked Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, despite what Siskel & Ebert, other Trek fans or anyone else says! 8-)

The Summer of 1984, I saw this with my childhood friend Devin at Galleria at Tyler Movie Theater in Riverside, California, now a Barnes & Noble, even collected Taco Bell's Star Trek III glasses... 8-) ua-cam.com/video/bPTxdQqa3l0/v-deo.html

I love the way these two great guys sum up The Original Crew's chemistry! One major quibble, these two actually said on their 1984 At the Movies review that Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is a pretty good sequel ua-cam.com/video/E8fu76RP_3k/v-deo.html and not lumped in as bad by Ebert herein. Roger also said in his 1979 Chicago Sun Times review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture www.rogerebe...

I love the way these two great guys sum up in their 1986 review here The Original Crew's chemistry and how George Lucas or Steven Spielberg would have ruined it, kind of like what JJ Abrams did with Star Trek 2009, but most especially 2013's Into Darkness, then also Star Wars: The Farce Awakens in 2015!

October 21st, 2003 Why is Captain Kirk so pissed off at Mister Rourke? KHAAANNNN! I saw Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan the Summer of 1982 at Regency Sterling Cinema 6 with our Monsignor Borrero and other altar boys from St Adelaide Church in Highland, California, so began my Star Trek: The Original Series Trekkie fandom... 8-)

"This is music for the future..." from my all-time favorite band, Electric Light Orchestra, clip broadcast on July 12th, 2006! 8-)
The Rocket Boots are probably held up at Daystrom Station 🖖
I never listened to these two idiots. They hate all the good movies, and like all the crap.
It's not my favorite Star Trek movie but it's not bad. I like the lighthearted campfire scene.
👀❤️
Siskkl: "They like each other and you can't fake that" Actually they faked it very well.
Star Trek III: Search for Spock is 40 years old! Made $76.5 million domestically and $87 million worldwide It's tough to make a decent follow-up to 'Wrath of Khan' which is still considered to be one of the best Star Trek films but the late Leonard Nimoy makes a very good directorial debut This is actually a very well-made sequel despite the even numbered entries making fans and critics very disappointed It still has big death scenes, strong moments, and it feels very operatic Christopher Lloyd makes for a decent villain but the character is more of a one-note player unable to match the late Ricardo Montalban Kirk gets some very dark character moments gaining something but losing something in the process And despite the controversy of fans addressing a huge retcon while also making Starfleet an antagonist the film still works thanks to fantastic special effects, some cool mythos when it comes to the Vulcan species, a decent pace, and balances action, adventure, and character drama James Horner's score is spectacular as always Each of the crew members get their chance to shine And there's many biblical themes of life, death, and rebirth The concept is nice even though Spock is not on screen for a lot of the running time his spirit and essence is present throughout The destruction of the Enterprise is quite epic too and they give it a lot of weight The characters' affection for each other going beyond the uniform clearly shows as well as how imperfect an organization like Starfleet is A crew is willing to sacrifice everything for a fallen friend showing this movie's sentiment and spirituality Nimoy manages to get across Christian themes and scientific ethics--how quickly it moves and the dangers of it It’s not as great as its predecessor but still a very watchable entry in the franchise being the more drama-based one
3 was not bad and both of you liked it
Siskel complained about excess drinking in this film? Seriously?
What does god need with a starship?? Swap out the word starship with money 😂😂😂
One and three were bad my ass.
Did the review end with a prescient comment about the JJ Abrams era of Trek Cinema ??? Well Mr Ebert, I couldn't agree more. Star Trek is no longer controlled by people who love it, but by people who love the money it can generate, and not even a Beastie Boys track can save the massive garbage ttrain being thrust on thristy fans. True the ruination was born with the William Shatrner helmed "V", but the real end of what Star Trek WAS in JJ turning into a razzle-dazzle CGI and emotionally vacant pew-pew sci-fi series. I will stick to the trilogy of II, III and IV to define the franchise.
“Don’t let it end this WAY, Captain.”
“They can’t tell me what to call them.” Very appreciate statement for this day and age.
There’s a difference between good and great. My favorite Star Trek movie is The Undiscovered Country but The Search for Spock is my favorite part in the Genesis Trilogy. Leonard Nimoy was a great director.
i like them all...to me V was the best about human emotion and relationships-shatner did not get the money for effects that he wanted to do-had he it would have been a different story.
Our grandfather was very sick but my dad still managed to take my brother and I to see this 🫂
Walter Koenig has the funniest line in this movie. "Guess who's coming to dinner". The audience in the theaters roared.
Nichelle wouldn't say that line. So he got it.
Only Star Trek 5 was bad, up to that point.
On the Klingon home world, the turkeys are the size of emus, with cassowary like spurs.
I love Star Trek 5 it's very exciting on the other hand Signs is a very boring movie Rodger Ebert
Didn't they have to put Sulu on the Excelsior because George Takei couldn't stand to be on the same set with William Shatner?
Star Trek III wasn't a bad movie. It was a good movie with a bad premise. Once they decided to dedicate an entire film to a resurrection plot - "Disney Death," a.k.a. "Comic Book Death" - the damage was done. All they could do then was to try to turn that sow's ear of a concept into the finest faux-silk purse they could make, and they largely succeeded.
I never listen to these two!
4 is my favorite. My wife and I also have a connect since we were Monterey Bay Aquarium members from '89 till '02. Love this whole movie. Catch when Kirk takes his first sip of Michelob. Pulls it off like he never tasted a beer before.
“They can’t tell me what to call them”. What a time this used to be.
Ebert originally gave positive reviews to The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock. Here he says they’re bad?
Siskel always seemed like a jerk. It was on full display here
It’s Trekkie
Roger Ebert predicted the fall of Disney and Star Wars.
I love how they bust on the movie so much in the end. It’s actually pretty funny. Thanks for posting this.
How prophetic there at the end, Mr. Ebert.
"They can't tell me what to call them." How i miss this sentiment.
TFW you find someone who really really wants to use the N word
If there is to be a brave new world, sounds like you're gonna have the hardest time living in it! 😜
'What's in a name? that which we call a rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet.'
They gave away way too much plot.
No such thing as bad star trek
2:20 search for Spock was not bad, it’s easily the second best in the series behind wrath of Khan 🤷♂️
VI is the best Star Trek film of all time to me.
I AM A TREKKIE.
The characters like each other. The actors, though? Not so much!
Shatner wanted to film a scene where Kirk fights five "Rockmen". They only had money for one Rockman costume. In the test footage, the stuntman is stumbling around the set in a heavy costume.
These two were buffoons. They hated Akira until it became popular.
this review is a little harsh, those two don't have a proper understanding of star trek.
To me, the extra little conversation between Spock and his father at the end of the film really adds to the endearing quality of the film. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/X0Yy6x2Jky8/v-deo.html
6 had some very clever dialogue: "According to one of my ancestors, once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." The punchline being that Sherlock Holmes was Vulcan.
And Spock is also half-human from his Mom Amanda. 8-)
No, it was Spock acknowledging his human ancestry.
If also a logical fallacy and is a terrible argument.
3 was good actually
The row row row your boat scene is the best in the movie.
What? You honestly think that's better than Sybok forcing the main trio to confront their hidden pain?
@@ricardocantoral7672 Yes
they couldnt even be bothered to film it on location.
@@purefoldnz3070 Probably due to budget constraints as their budget was cut repeatedly both before and during filming. Still the best scene in the movie. You don't need to film on location to make the scene work, if the writing is good, it matters significantly less, look at TOS and TNG where they almost always filmed on a stage/backlot.
@@davidcoss3493 thats because it was a tv show this was a film and they cheaped out on something easy to shoot.
This was the first Star Trek movie I watched and I saw it in the theater on opening weekend! By that point, my Dad and I were watching TNG every week and I only watched a small bit of an episode of TOS (I think it was “The Changeling”, in hindsight), but I still enjoyed the movie a lot and watched it several more times when we got it on VHS. For me, it’s the third best in the series, behind Wrath of Khan (best) and First Contact (2nd).
I like how Gene says the crew like each other on screen when, in reality, most of the cast hated each other, or at least Shatner. Anyway, IV was the one I watched the second most as a kid after VI, though the probe sounds gave me nightmares.
How can you not love Christopher Plummer as Chang?! Quoting Shakespeare! William Shatner was his understudy back in the day. ❤
Best to worst .... Star Trek 3 Star trek 2 Star trek 4 Star trek 6 Star trek 5 Star trek 1
I love seeing Doc Brown play one of the most evil Klingon in all of Star Trek. And i love the epic fight between him and Kirk in the end.
